BIMHUIS TV Presents: Matt Carmichael Quintet

Promising saxophonist from Glasgow combines jazz with influences from Scottish folk music.
Matt Carmichael was born in Conon Bridge, a small village in the Scottish Highlands. Since his teens he has been recognized as an exceptional talent on tenor sax. His recent album Marram is named after the long grass of the Scottish coastal sand dunes. This landscape is an important influence for the saxophonist’s compositions, which he performs together with respected musicians from the Glasgow jazz scene. Matt Carmichael started his career with the het National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. In 2021 he was invited by the Grammy-winning WDR Big Band to be a guest soloist, performing his own music as arranged by Bob Mintzer. A remarkable addition to his own band is Charlie Stewart, a violinist with a traditional Scottisch background. Pianist Fergus McCreadie has previously performed on our stage with his trio.
