Tal Farlow 1978 Review by Scott Yanow
One of the more obscure albums by guitarist Tal Farlow, this LP (not yet reissued on CD by Concord) features Farlow in a sparse trio with bassist Gary Mazzaroppi and drummer Tom Sayek. Performing two originals ("Mahoney's 11 Ohms" and "Gymkhana in Soho") plus a variety of standards/war-horses, Farlow sounds in fine form if at times overly relaxed. His sidemen listen and react closely, with the spotlight being almost entirely on the guitarist. A solid if not overly memorable effort.
Tal Farlow
Leading early bop guitarist who helped define the modern jazz guitar with his great speed, technique, and flow of ideas.
