53. Deutsches Jazzfestival Frankfurt: Ingrid Laubrock Quartet

German-born jazz saxophonist and contributor to the Brooklyn avant jazz scene who first gained notice playing and recording in London.

Pianist Jason Moran simply calls her a "true visionary". Ingrid Laubrock, born in Münsterland in 1970, studied in London and moved to Brooklyn in 2008, where she established herself in the city's avant-garde scene. Mary Halvorson, Anthony Braxton and Dave Douglas are just a few of the many top-class names with whom she was and is active on projects.

The compositions for the project with which she is performing in Frankfurt were written three years ago, but have not been able to be performed live due to the pandemic. A sextet version recorded in 2019 will also not be released until the end of this year. Intricately winding melodies, melancholic-brittle harmonies and unexpected style and genre fusions between new music and jazz avant-garde form the framework for spontaneous interactions between top-class improvisers.

The pieces experience their live premiere in a quartet version with the spectacular guitarist Brandon Seabrook. The sharp-edged splinter of sound contrasts with oblique dissonances and highly dynamic rock energy. Bassist Michael Formanek, fondly remembered from his project with the hr big band at the 2019 Jazz Festival, acts as a versatile baseline player, while Tom Rainey colors the action and drives it forward. And above everything floats the virtuosic and sensitive sound of Ingrid Laubrock's saxophone, which also effortlessly transcends the boundaries of style and material as an instrumentalist.
