Discovered by the late Chick Corea, Avishai Cohen’s is on the path to a rich musical career. Present today on the stage of the Maillon in Strasbourg, the distinguished double bassist (not to be confused with the namesake trumpet player…) is playing, on this occasion, in the classy format known as the trio. Supported by Elchin Shirinov on piano and Roni Kaspi on drums, Avishai Cohen offers various titles from his album Shifting Sands. Released in a superb transparent vinyl case, this disc is present here with "The Window," an up-tempo theme with the air of a chase, thanks to "Below" and its dreamlike atmosphere close to Ludovico Einaudi's miniatures, and via "Intertwined,” a piece marked by the round and woody sounds of the double bass. Coming from a multicultural family, the Israeli composer has been weaving a close link with the Mediterranean basin and Sephardic traditions for ages. If the present set does not formally evoke this melting pot (one thinks of the moving Ladino song of Yasmin Levy), the inherent solar dimension nevertheless goes in this direction. Confirmation with the significant "Joy," a confounding track of spontaneity and whose bow strokes only reinforce the luminous character of the whole...
