Influential American saxophonist presents new album Return to the Stars on ECM Records.
Mark Turner is a role model for the younger generations of saxophone players. His exploratory intellect and intimate expressivity on the tenor horn has regularly brought up comparisons with one of his great examples, Warne Marsh. Regarding his compositions, Turner also stands out for his original sources of inspiration: his recent album Return from the Stars, released on ECM Records, was named after the science fiction novel by Stanisłav Lem from 1961.
What’s so striking about the Mark Turner Quartet is the ingenious interplay between Turner’s tenor sax and Jason Palmer’s trumpet. Circling around them are the double bass of Joe Martin, and the drums of Jonathan Pinson, who get plenty of freedom in this line-up. The result is an open sound that offers equal space to each of the four musicians. Mark Turner has previously played sold-out performances on our stage as a member of Fly, the all-star trio with double bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard.
