New international improv jazz project bridges various generations.
As a co-founder of the progressive label Clean Feed, Rodrigo Amado always has his ear to the ground when it comes to free-thinking talent. At the same time, the Portuguese saxophonist likes to collaborate with his free jazz and improv idols. In his new quartet he plays with pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and drummer Gerry Hemingway. The band name is a nod to the eponymous album by Sonny Rollins from 1962, but the project refuses to sound nostalgic. Every performance leads to completely new music, with every player bringing something from their own generation and background.
Rodrigo Amado is inspired by the raw beauty of the great tenor saxophonists from jazz history, but also by radical improv pioneers such as Albert Ayler and Joe McPhee. German pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach has been a mainstay of European improv jazz, regularly collaborating with the equally legendary saxophonist Evan Parker. Ingebrigt Håker Flaten made name as the bass player in the groundbreaking Scandinavian trio The Thing. American drummer Gerry Hemingway has appeared on our stage since the 1980s with regular collaborators such as Anthony Braxton, Ray Anderson, and Ernst Reijseger.
