Both profound thinkers and virtuosi – something that can also be said of the Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein – Liszt and Busoni admired one another and fit together perfectly into one programme. BBC Music Magazine praised Gerstein’s recording of Liszt’s Transcendental Studies for its ‘amazing keyboard dexterity’ and ‘ultra-clear articulation,’ while of a previous Busoni venture, the gargantuan Piano Concerto, International Piano wrote that ‘Gerstein manifestly has the measure of the solo part.’
