Basses Loaded Review
by Scott Yanow
Arni Egilsson, a bassist equally skilled in jazz as in classical music, was born in Iceland and became a fixture in the Los Angeles studios. For Basses Loaded, he mostly plays utilizing his bow, heading a quartet that includes his idol, Ray Brown, on plucked bass plus pianist Pete Jolly and drummer Jimmie Smith. The unusual quartet works quite well with Egilsson usually taking the melody. The music is generally more conventional than the instrumentation, with all but three of the ten songs being well-known jazz standards, but the bassists in particular sound inspired on this likable date.
