Britten’s First (canonical) Quartet was written in American in 1941 and first performed in Los Angeles. Receiving its UK première, Charlotte Bray’s new work and her first for the medium, introduced by the Castalian in Hamburg in March, is a musical response to the migration crisis. The piece will be performed in conjunction with an art installation by Caroline Burraway, of children’s dresses handmade from discarded refugee jackets. The Castalian String Quartet comprises of Sini Simonen violin; Daniel Roberts violin; Ruth Gibson viola; and Steffen Morris cello.
