Argentinian pianist Nelson Goerner will be performing works by Debussy and Schumann. Finished in 1903, Debussy’s Estampes (‘Prints’) is a three-movement impressionist suite, with each movement influenced by distinct sound worlds: Indonesian gamelan music; the Arabic scale and strumming Spanish guitar; and French folk melodies. Schumann’s Symphonic Studies began life as a theme and variations on a theme by Baron von Fricken, whose ward Ernestine was once briefly (and secretly) engaged to the composer.
