Jazzberry Patch: Jazzberry Patch

The mid-1970s was a wonderful time in Ft. Lauderdale. One of the underground attractions was a tiny and hip little jazz club in the middle of town called Bogart's. People fell in love with the cozy pub and packed the house frequently. The music and persona of this undiscovered yet widely accepted band delivered a raw and instinctive sound that they could not resist.
South Florida is a melting pot of culture and music. Unbeknown to many people, this area has produced an impressive number of jazz musicians who have risen to international stature. Among them Cannonball Adderly, Blue Mitchell, Jaco Pastorius, and Mike Longo and a multitude of others.
Another group of very talented musicians appeared and persisted from the mid-'70s well into the late 80s as Jazzberry Patch. This driving, pulsing, throbbing, and delighting group managed to squeeze every note it touched into musical gold. Ben Champion is clearly a major talent and stylist on sax and flute unlike anyone you have heard before. Ken Burkhart conjures up a swirling mist of burning, smoking, clinging, funk on B3 organ and keyboards. And Danny Burger transports the whole group into a mammoth pulse of exciting delight with his superb skill and vision of rhythm. People who listened to Jazzberry Patch in the mid 1970s still talk about them today. Although the trio has not been officially together for years, Jazzberry Patch reunions still occur periodically in South Florida and attract many fans.
