Wolfgang Dauner - Charlie Mariano ‎
Meditation On A Landscape - Tagore

Music from the Film "Ich wollte sein eine Landschaft" (I wanted to be a landscape) in rememberance of the Calcutta born poet, philosoph and musician Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He was the first asian to get the Nobel Prize for literature (1913). From the explanatory statement: “because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West.”

For this film about Tagore's life by Durgo Shankar Ghosh, produced by SDR T.V. Stuttgart, Wolfgang Dauner, keyboards, composed the music and played it together with Charlie Mariano, alto sax, bamboo flute and Ernst Ströer on percussion in 1986.

Don't expect "the experimental Dauner" (Oimels, Output, Et Cetera, Kunstkopfindianer) and don't expect typical "new age" music in this work. Floating and meditative musical landscapes are passing by. A large space where the listener can create pictures by his own imagination. This is no record to present solo skills. What is presented is soul. I would like to know how the musicians have prepared themselves for this special work. Maybe by reading Tagore's poets, because I think that this music resembles in a sensitive way Tagore's maybe most known book "Gitanjali", that begins like this:

"Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life.
This little flute of a reed thou hast carried over hills and dales, and hast breathed through it melodies eternally new.
At the immortal touch of thy hands my little heart loses its limits in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable.
Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of mine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still there is room to fill.
When thou commandest me to sing it seems that my heart would break with pride; and I look to thy face, and tears come to my eyes.
All that is harsh and dissonant in my life melts into one sweet harmony---and my adoration spreads wings like a glad bird on its flight across the sea.
I know thou takest pleasure in my singing. I know that only as a singer I come before thy presence.
I touch by the edge of the far-spreading wing of my song thy feet which I could never aspire to reach.
Drunk with the joy of singing I forget myself and call thee friend who art my lord."
