James P. Johnson / 16 Songs of Piano Stride & Charleston (Tribute)

 

 

James P. Johnson was a pioneer of the piano stride style, influenced by Scott Joplin who himself popularized ragtime. Fats Waller was his student and he influenced many other jazz giants such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum and Thelonious Monk to name but a few. They all drew their inspiration from his style, technique and compositions, developing their own harmonies and musicality. One of his most famous song is "Charleston", part of the Broadway Show musical score "Runnin Wild". "Charleston" was a hit in the 20's, became a popular dance worldwide, and remains characteristic of that era.
